Amitriptyline for nerve pain

Amitriptyline is the generic of Elavil and it came out in 1961 in dose sizes of 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, and 150 mg. The FDA indication has always been for depression but amitriptyline has been found to have many other uses. I will list these other uses for amitriptyline and discuss some of them.

This is an article by Britt Talley Daniel MD, retired member of the American Academy of Neurology, Migraine textbook author, Podcaster, YouTube video producer, and Blogger.

 Amitriptyline has been used for:

Low Mood. This refers to persons with decreased mood, they seem unhappy, but who are without the full DSMV symptoms of depression.

Depression. This refers to persons who have full DSMV symptoms of depression.

Anxiety. Anxiety refers to someone who is worried to a certain degree. All life has some degree of anxiety. Anxiety may be expressed as a generalized state of muscle tension, headache, and trouble sleeping.

Panic Disorder. This refers to  attacks usually lasting less than 5 minutes with symptoms of trembling, trouble breathing, chest tightness, and dizziness. Patients complain of feeling frightened and filled with terror.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are symptoms  that occur after exposure to trauma. These symptoms may be unwanted upsetting memories, nightmares, or flash backs. They may have trouble concentrating, trouble falling or staying asleep or may feel irritable and experience angry or aggressive outbursts.

Pelvic Pain. This group is a diffuse collection of different gynecological problems.

Polyneuropathy pain. Generalized polyneuropathy, not specifically diagnosed, commonly has pain.

Chronic Neuropathic Pain. This is another rather vague, nonspecific group of patients.

Painful Diabetic Neuropathy. Perhaps the most painful neuropathy of the group.

Postherpetic Neuralgia. This relates to burning pain following herpes skin infection, also called-shingles. The pain may be severe when it is in the face, as in postherpetic neuralgia of the seventh nerve with pain around the eye and associated seventh nerve palsy, also called The Ramsey Hunt syndrome.

Trigeminal Neuralgia. Neuralgic pain which comes with intense salvoes of shocking type pain in the face in the sensory distribution of the fifth cranial nerve.

Phantom Limb Pain. This occurs usually in the arm following traumatic or surgical limb removal. It may also occur following leg removal.

Postoperative or Traumatic Neuropathic Pain This is worse following sensory nerve involvement.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. This causes chronic pain in an arm or leg which develops after an injury, stroke, heart attack, or surgery. The pain seems out of proportion to the severity of the initial injury.

Cancer Related Neuropathy. Cancer involving peripheral nerves, which becomes chronic.

Guillain Barré syndrome. More specifically named Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, CDIP. There is typically “radicular pain” early on during the syndrome which later clears.

HIV neuropathy. HIV damage to nerves throughout the body.

Spinal cord injury. Pain at the level of the cord damage alone, or also the trunk and legs below the band of involvement.

Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia may result in chronic pain in multiple sites-head, arm, chest, abdomen, leg, upper back and spine. Pain may be mild to severe.

Pain from arthritis. Arthritis is really inflammation of bony joints. There may be pain, stiffness, warmth, and redness.
